Roma communities and Roma culture in Europe have always been observed. The Roma, as people without a territory, but with a distinctive culture, have been seen as a threat, as the Other; they have been marginalized, ignored, discarded, imprisoned and killed. The knowledge that we dispose of regarding their culture is filled with stereotypes and the unknown. The „Tzigania Project“ by Chuck Todaro is supposedly directed towards the minimization of this phenomenon, and through including the Roma into the mechanisms of the neoliberal capitalist world, in the tourist context: for a certain fee, tourists can live with the „real Roma“ people and truly perceive their culture first hand. The questions which arise in this context are gathered around the concept of Otherness, within the concept of liberation – can the Other here speak or is it just a mere monetization of Otherness as such? Can the spectacularization and the commodification of the Roma lifestyle be a way of integrating the Roma into the contemporary European society, or is it a way of their petrification in the margins of the European society, as well as not understanding their communities and culture. This paper revolves around the „Tzigania Project“ and its significance inside a theoretical context of the Other.
