The purpose of this M.A. thesis is to analyze the Lucretius' argument, also known as the symmetry argument. Before I present and analyze the argument, which will also serve as the focal point of this M.A. thesis, I will strive to create a structured and intuitive environment with the purpose of giving readers a deeper understanding of the underlying analysis. I will accomplish this by mentioning the value of death in the first few chapters and afterwards I shall also touch upon the discussion on the assymetry of early death and late birth and I will also deal with the assymetry of time in the physical sense based on the work of Paul Horwich's Assymetries in Time. In other words, the Lucretius' argument is connected to the philosophical discussion regarding death and we use it to show that death, meaning the non-existence of its subject, is not something to be feared. At first glance, it might seem that such a view is incoherent since the fear of death is one of our most primal fears so it comes naturally for us to assume that the view that death is not something bad is completely wrong. Still, it also appears that what we fear most regarding death is the fear of the „process“ of dying. In other words, we fear death because we can never know when or where we will come face to face with it. The main point of the Lucretius' argument is not the process of death but, rather, the non-existence of the subject following death. That kind of non-existence is also called post-mortem non-existence and, through Lucretius' argument we are trying to equate that type of non-existence with pre-natal non-existence, meaning the non-existence of the subject before his/her birth. In this M.A. thesis I will set the ground that will enable us to follow this discussion more easily starting with some general philosophical viewpoints regardig death and I will try to come up with my own view on the purpose and validity of the Lucretius' argument. Since the philosophical discussion about death is extremely sensitive and complex, so as to not go off-track, I will limit myself to mentioning only the most relevant philosophical viewpoints and authors while mentioning some other views only to draw the distinction between them and the ones that are important for this particular topic. I shall try to do this because I believe that knowing the basic differences between certain theories and viewpoints makes this subject vastly easier to follow.
