Ovaj će se rad fokusirati na prevođenje dvije kratke priče autora Trumana Capotea, „Miriam“ i „A Tree of Night“, koje su objavljene 1949. u njegovoj prvoj zbirci kratkih priča A Tree of Night, and Other Stories. U uvodu diplomskog rada objašnjavaju se razlozi za odabir baš ovih tekstova za prijevod i situacija s već postojećim prijevodom Capoteove zbirke, nakon čega slijedi kratak opis teorijskog pristupa kojim sam se služila tijekom prevođenja. Iduće poglavlje sastoji se od pobližeg... More upoznavanja s autorovim životom, kontekstom nastajanja zbirke A Tree of Night, and Other Stories i njenim formalnim i sadržajnim karakteristikama te sociopolitičkim stanjem u Sjedinjenim Američkim Državama u vrijeme kada je Capote pisao svoje priče. Također se jezgrovito predstavlja žanr američke južnjačke gotike, jedan od čijih je poznatijih predstavnika Truman Capote. Glavni dio rada čine prijevodi dvaju priča i analiza određenih poteškoća koje su nastale tijekom prevođenja svakog teksta, a zaključak pruža kratki osvrt na proces prevođenja, strategije koje su se pritom koristile i ciljeve. Abstract (english)
This paper will focus on translating two short stories by the author Truman Capote, namely, "Miriam" and "A Tree of Night," which were published in 1949 in his first collection of short stories, A Tree of Night, and Other Stories. The introduction of the thesis explains the reasons for choosing these particular texts for translation and the situation with the existing translation of Capote's collection, followed by a brief description of the theoretical approach I used during the... More translation process. The next chapter provides a closer look at the author's life, the context of the creation of the collection A Tree of Night, and Other Stories, its formal and content characteristics, and the socio-political situation in the United States at the time when Capote wrote his stories. It also briefly introduces the genre of American Southern Gothic, of which Truman Capote is a prominent figure. The main part of the paper consists of translations of the two stories and an analysis of specific difficulties that arose during the translation of each text, while the conclusion provides a brief overview of the translation process, the strategies used, and the objectives.
